Capital-Saratoga is known for its historic villages and eclectic cities, surrounded by farms, apple orchards, canals and woodlands.
Albany’s mosaic blends old and new architecture. Tour the French chateau-inspired Capitol, a marvel of late 19th-century grandeur, and catch a show at the opulent Palace Theater or The Egg, an ultra-modern structure at the Empire State Plaza. Hop on the quirky Aqua Duck that rolls through historic neighborhoods and then splashes down into the Hudson River.
With near-perfect acoustics, the 1875 Troy Savings Bank Music Hall still attracts world-famous musicians. Troy’s Victorian architecture houses antique shops, galleries and diverse restaurants. In Schenectady, surround yourself with history in the Stockade District, with pre-Revolutionary War houses and remnants of the Erie Canal.
The Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater highlights the Battle of Saratoga, turning point of the American Revolution. Adventures abound in nearby Saratoga Springs, renowned for its famous mineral springs, performing arts center, worldclass polo, and Thoroughbred racing at Saratoga Race Course. Saratoga Gaming & Raceway offers harness racing, gaming and a nightclub. Folk artist Grandma Moses was inspired by the rolling hills and picture-perfect farmland that surround the quaint villages of Cambridge and Greenwich. This area with five covered bridges, still maintains a timeless charm. Try your hand at fly fishing in the cool spring-fed waters of the Battenkill, a nationally recognized trout stream. It’s also great for tubing and kayaking. Just outside Cambridge, the nuns at the New Skete Monastery sell heavenly cheesecakes.
The Great Sacandaga Lake—29 miles long with 125 miles of shoreline—offers a myriad of choices for four-season outdoor recreation.
