Amid rolling hills, picturesque farmland and geological wonders, attractions in Central New York showcase great American art, ingenuity and adventures, as well as historic moments in baseball and the perfect apple pie. Country lanes lead to orchards, roadside farm stands and charming historic inns.
The Erie Canal stretches through the heart of the region, offering many options for scenic cruises. At historic Erie Canal Village, in Rome, a mule-drawn packet boat ride will transport you to a simpler time. An elevator takes you down to see amazing rock formations at Howe Caverns, voted one of the Top 5 Northeast Family Attractions by Disney’s FamilyFun readers. You can picnic beside a spectacular 167-foot waterfall at Chittenango Falls State Park.
Cooperstown, filled with many fascinating sites, is a destination in itself. At The Farmers’ Museum, watch craft demonstrations as you tour a recreated village and experience what farm life was like in 1845. View one of the world’s best Folk Art collections and renowned American Indian Art at the Fenimore Art Museum. Just north of town, the lakeside Glimmerglass Opera was described by the London Times as “the most magical of settings.” Of course, no trip to Cooperstown is complete without a visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Tours at Brewery Ommegang, a Belgian-style microbrewery just outside the village, finish with beer tasting and chocolates. You can tour the Saranac Brewery and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. Sports fans will also enjoy the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota and the championship golf course at Turning Stone Resort Casino.
