Less than an hour’s drive from Manhattan, the Hudson Valley is known for quaint riverside villages, palatial historic homes, farm-fresh cuisine, and hauntingly beautiful landscapes that have inspired generations of artists, writers and statesmen.
Washington Irving set many of his stories to paper here, including the classic, Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Visit Sunnyside, his charming 19th-century cottage in Tarrytown. Many other historic homes offer tours: the Vanderbilt Mansion and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park; Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate; and a Gothic revival treasure, Lyndhurst, to name a few.
At Olana, Frederick Church’s estate, walk amid landscapes that inspired the Hudson River School paintings that defined America in the 19th century. Explore contemporary art museums like Dia:Beacon, where the collection includes works by Andy Warhol, or the open-air Storm King Art Center, with an ever-changing sky as backdrop for 120 monumental sculptures. Check out regional art and crafts at Sugar Loaf Village.
Galleries and shops line the main streets of towns like Cold Spring, Tarrytown, Rhinebeck, Nyack, and Hudson, known for some of the nation’s best antique hunting. In Central Valley, Woodbury Common boasts the world’s largest collection of designer outlets. Spend an evening watching old fashioned madcap air shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, home of one of the world’s largest collections of historic bi-planes.
You’ll definitely eat well in the Hudson Valley. Enjoy local wines and foods at celebrated country inns and the world-famous Culinary Institute of America. Or go to the source and visit any one of the region’s abundant farmers markets, artisanal cheese makers, and award-winning wineries.
